Maroondah Woodturning Club / Eastern Woodturners
Compiled by Charlie Chamberlain (02 October 2017)
This history of Maroondah Woodturning Club/Eastern Woodturners is formed from information gained from a Life Member and one of the twenty members who were involved in the club’s first year as well as the club files. This information is correct to the best of my knowledge.
Most of the Victorian clubs started by being mentored by other groups. Yarra Woodturners helped to start Central Woodturners, now Woodcraft Manningham and Forrest Hill. Forrest Hill mentored Koonung and Maroondah Woodturners.
At Maroondah Woodturning Club – Charlie turning with Max Sexton, Bob Waldron, Fred Leach, Les White, Simon Jones
Neil Thompson (Life Member) approached Forrest Hill Woodturning Group with a view to joining them and was advised their membership was full. Forrest Hill agreed to mentor a new group with the help of Geoff Bird, John Atkinson and Phil Garth (Life Member).
Neil placed an advertisement in the Croydon Library and Phil did a turning demonstration in the Library. The Maroondah group was formed in 1994 with twenty members. The club was incorporated in 1996. The official opening of Eastern Woodturners was 7th November 2009. The name change from Maroondah Woodturning Club to Eastern Woodturners was February 2010.
